Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin would benefit from a move to a team like Atalanta should he quit Goodison Park, according to journalist Bill Connelly.

In an article for ESPN [31 December] outlining the possible free agent movers in 2025, Connelly named Serie A sides Atalanta and Lazio as good fits for Calvert-Lewin, who is widely expected to leave Everton.

As former Toffees scout Bryan King exclusively told Goodison News, the 27-year-old could still attract a transfer fee of £20million should he leave in January when under contract.

In terms of places he could end up as a free agent in the summer, though, Connelly wrote: “When Calvert-Lewin was at his best, he proved to be one of the most elite aerial threats in the world.

“That’s in no way the most important trait for an elite forward in 2025, but you can still find some clubs that might be intrigued. The Bundesliga’s Werder Bremen and TSG Hoffenheim still deploy loads of crosses in their attacks.

“If you’re aiming higher, though, it should be noted that Atalanta and Lazio – both currently in contention for Champions League play – attempt large numbers of crosses and are good at it, too. And Atalanta might be losing a great young attacker or two soon as well.”

Everton splashed out £1.5million to sign Calvert-Lewin from Sheffield United in August 2016 and it is fair to say he has more than paid that back.

While he has gone massively off the boil in recent seasons, his contribution to the Toffees – when other, more expensive recruits have come and gone – cannot be played down.

All that said, it is looking almost certain he will be leaving Merseyside in 2025. And if a deal for a promising player elsewhere can be agreed, DCL could be off as soon as next month.

As for the suggestion of joining Atalanta, or indeed Lazio, it is not the worst shout in the world. Atalanta, remember, are the reigning Europa League winners and are top of Serie A.

On that basis, however, you have to wonder just how much the Italian side will need a player like Calvert-Lewin when everything is going so right for them.

Either way, this is one to watch over the coming weeks and months. Once Calvert-Lewin does inevitably leave, he will go with the best wishes of supporters.

In other Everton news, TFG have been predicted to take Sean Dyche action soon.
