The Esk baffled by Kevin Thelwell reports as TFG-Everton decision revealed

Kevin Thelwell’s future at Everton remains unclear despite reports in the media, according to The Esk.

Writing via his personal blog on 31 December, Everton insider Paul Quinn reported that there’s confusion about the source of claims that The Friedkin Group will keep Thelwell as the Blues’ director of football.

On 19 December, iNews journalist Mark Douglas reported that Dan Friedkin wants to keep Thelwell on Merseyside.

The Esk, however, is unsure of what role the former Wolves chief would play in replacing Sean Dyche should the new owners get rid of the manager.

He said: “The choice of who replaces Dyche is of course, fascinating, not least because it raises questions as to who makes that decision and what role does the other element in our football operations, the Director of Football take in the decision?

“There have been media reports of support for Thelwell, but to my knowledge, it is not known from where those reports originated. Are they from the club media personnel or the Friedkins themselves? History would suggest it is from club sources who historically have always supported the status quo despite overwhelming evidence on most occasions not to do so.”

Who is Everton chief Kevin Thelwell?

Everton hired Thelwell as their director of football in February 2022.

He’s since overseen the ridiculously-hard management of transfers during one of the most financially challenging periods of Everton’s long history.

And considering the fact the Toffees have had two points deductions and been in several relegation battles, they’ve done well to remain in the Premier League.

Thelwell’s work should be commended, in truth.

Not only has he helped improve the PSR outlook at Goodison but he’s also delivered a manager and a squad that’s been able to stay in the Premier League.

Sure, it’s not been pretty. But given the fact that he’s worked with almost two hands tied behind his back, it’s fair to say he’s done a good job.

Unfortunately for the former Wolves, Derby and Preston chief, he might fall victim to TFG wanting their own man in his position.

It’s an owner’s prerogative to make changes like that but Thelwell’s work, on the whole, has been good enough to ensure he stays in the job.

In other Everton news, a huge update on when Dyche will be sacked has emerged from an insider at Goodison Park.
