Journalist shares if Man United complete transfers for De Ligt and Everton gem Branthwaite

Manchester United will not be able to sign Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite and Matthijs de Ligt this summer, according to Chris Beesley.

The Red Devils had been eager to bring the Toffees centre-back to Old Trafford this summer, but reports have suggested that a deal is now less likely and they have instead turned their attention to Bayern Munich’s De Ligt [talkSPORT, 1 July].

While some have suggested United still hold an interest in Branthwaite as well as the Dutchman [Dharmesh Sheth, 1 July], Liverpool Echo journalist Beesley doesn’t think they could sign both players and comply with PSR.

Speaking on the Royal Blue Mersey YouTube channel (2 July, 17:25) he said: “United were the main contenders and there’s Matthijs De Ligt.

“David Ornstein is incredibly well connected and he has emphasised the two deals are impendent of each other, it’s not like one is linked to the other.

“But I just don’t see from a PSR perspective, if United are going in for De Ligt they’re not going to be able to get Branthwaite as well.”

Will Jarrad Branthwaite exit Everton for Manchester United in summer transfer window?

Everton are in an excellent position this summer as they hold all the cards when it comes to Branthwaite’s future as they don’t have to sell him to comply with the Premier League’s financial fair play rules.

That means the Toffees can set their asking price as high as they like for the England international as it ultimately doesn’t matter to them whether or not anyone decides to fork over the money to match their valuation.

If they sell him, they will have plenty of money to invest in Sean Dyche’s squad. If they don’t, they get to keep one of English football’s most exciting and promising young defenders for at least another season. It is a complete win-win.

Ultimately, United will have to pick between their two targets this summer as it seems impossible that they will be able to secure both defenders’ signatures.

If you had to bet, you’d imagine they will pursue De Ligt as they have shown absolutely no intention of getting anywhere near Everton’s asking price for Branthwaite.
