Ashley Young has been named as the “surprise” element for Everton this season as he “defies Father Time”, as explained in The Athletic.
A variety of the site’s writers [14 November] picked out the standout surprise player from each Premier League club so far this term, with Young, 39, credited for his turnaround from a slow start.
The full-back is again an established regular for Sean Dyche despite having begun his professional career way back in 2003.
“It is only a couple of months since the narrative around Young was markedly different. He endured a torrid start to the season, getting sent off in the opener against Brighton and missing the decisive penalty in the Carabao Cup shootout defeat by Southampton,” Patrick Boyland explained.
“Yet just a couple of months on, one of the enduring images from Everton’s win at Ipswich Town last month was Young celebrating with jubilant fans in the away end.
“Profiting from injuries to captain Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson, the 39-year-old has been a regular starter this season. At some stage, Everton will need to look to the future, but for now, Young is worth his spot as he defies Father Time.”
Ashley Young proving age is just a number with Everton form
Many would have to be forgiven for writing Young off at the start of this season and believing his time to wind down has come.
But the fact the 39-cap England man has managed to find more in the tank to put in a string of rejuvenated performances is immense testament to his dedication.
In a pro career now spanning over two decades, Young first appeared in the Premier League with Watford back in 2006-07. When he made his first senior appearance aged 18 in 2003, current Everton first-team star Youssef Chermiti was not yet born.
Young’s son Tyler, 18, has already made his own professional bow for Peterborough United, but Young Sr has no plans to call time on his career just yet.
He along with Seamus Coleman signed a contract extension for this season, which will again be reassessed in the coming months.
