Contract talks between Dele Alli and Everton are still “some way off” after new injury developments at Goodison Park, according to Joe Thomas.

The England international is understood to have sustained a new setback in his recovery on Merseyside after his contract with Sean Dyche’s side expired at the end of last season [Joe Thomas, 3 October].

Although this new muscle strain has delayed the attacking midfielder’s potential return, Liverpool Echo journalist Thomas insists the Blues still want to be able to offer Dele a new deal if he can prove his fitness.

Speaking on the Royal Blue YouTube channel (4 October, 19:00) he said: “If he gets back strong enough, they want to be in a position to offer him a new deal.

“The club do see a potential future at Everton for Dele Alli if he can overcome what I think we all agree are very significant hurdles. That conversation is still some way off and this isn’t me by any stretch of the imagination saying it is ever actually going to happen, but there is that intent there.

“Everton have laid the foundations that if they believe that Dele represented an opportunity for Everton, they’ve already had the conversations with Tottenham Hotspur to help smooth the pathway for that.”

What has happened to Dele Alli at Everton and Goodison Park?

Whether or not Dele will ever manage to earn a new contract on Merseyside remains unclear, but what is obvious is that the Toffees want to do everything in their power to support the midfielder in his recovery.

Dyche wouldn’t be allowing the former England international to train with his side if he didn’t believe that he had something to offer on the training ground or the playing field in the future.

Any conversations about his long-term future on Merseyside may well have been pushed further down the line as a result of the latest injury developments at Goodison, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t happen in the future.

Ultimately, the ball is in Dele’s court. He has to show Dyche and the decision-makers around him that he can return to full fitness.

If he does, he could well earn a new deal as the foundations are in place. If he doesn’t, the Blues are unlikely to take any unnecessary risks.
