Journo moots new Patterson 'Question' at Everton after Dyche drops new injury update

Joe Thomas has been left questioning whether or not Nathan Patterson will ever be a “serious part” of Sean Dyche’s Everton side.

Although the Scottish international was expected to feature against Ipswich Town on Saturday (19 October), Dyche has confirmed the right-back is not yet fit enough to return to the first-team fold [Daily Record, 17 October].

Although Liverpool Echo journalist Thomas expects the defender to be given an opportunity to impress when fit, he isn’t convinced he will ever become a regular starter while Dyche is in charge at Goodison Park.

Speaking on the Royal Blue YouTube channel (18 October, 22:00) he said: “I do think there is a big question over Patterson and whether Patterson will ever be a serious part of a Dyche side.

“Obviously he needs to get back to full fitness in order to do that and hopefully he does. He should get the opportunity at some point this season when he is fit because we know as good as Coleman is, injuries do catch up with him.

“Whilst there is Ashely Young there, you’d imagine Patterson will get an opportunity if he is fit and it is up to him to take it, but that’s going to be an interesting one.”

What has happened to Everton star Nathan Patterson at Goodison Park?

It does seem strange that despite playing several games for the Under-21s and featuring in first-team training over the international break, Patterson seems to still be a way away from playing for Dyche at Goodison.

While the Toffees boss does notoriously demand a lot from his players, it seems strange that he has been so reluctant to throw Patterson back into the fold, particularly when his options at full-back have been so limited.

The manager and defender’s relationship has been the subject of plenty of speculation over the last couple of years and it is only natural that eyebrows will be raised further when decisions like this are made.

Hopefully, there is nothing more going on behind the scenes at Goodison as that wouldn’t be good for Patterson or the rest of the team. If all goes to plan, the Scotland international should be back on the playing field sooner rather than later.
