Everton rumours are circulating that suggest The Friedkin Group could appoint former Roma chief executive Lina Souloukou on Merseyside after their takeover, according to Corriere dello Sport.
The Italian outlet’s website reported on 18 October that the Greek exec could be headed for the Toffees, but suggested it would be a “curious” move given her departure from the Stadio Olimpico less than a month ago.
Souloukou stepped down from the Serie A side last month amid fan backlash over the sacking of club legend Daniele de Rossi as manager eight months after taking charge and four games into a new three-year permanent deal [The Athletic, 22 September].
Farhad Moshiri and Everton board set for exit
The idea of Souloukou forming part of Dan Friedkin’s new hierarchy at Everton doesn’t seem that outlandish when the American is likely to need a number of new faces to replace those who go.
Current majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri will be on the way out, and the interim board is said to largely be made up of close associates of his, according to Ian Herbert in the Daily Mail’s print edition on 12 October (Page 6), so it would make sense for them to go too.
Although CdS suggests the Friedkins got rid of Souloukou at Roma, meaning it would be odd for them to reappoint her at their new club, her exit looks to very much be tied to the De Rossi situation.
That shouldn’t make her any more of a risk at Everton than The Friedkin Group themselves, although signs of trigger-happy moves with managers might ring a few alarm bells when considered against Moshiri’s record.
An initial managerial change would not be a major shock as even Sean Dyche seems to realise he was the man for a specific challenge at Everton [Sky Sports, 5 October], and having kept the club up twice the new regime are likely to be looking at a different profile.
Whether he is allowed to see out the remainder of his contract until the summer or not remains to be seen, but with Friedkin predicted to be in by the end of November [Alan Myers, 16 October] Toffees supporters shouldn’t be far off finding out whether an immediate switch is on the cards.
In other Everton news, the Toffees are ready to allow a wanted striker to leave in January as a plan emerges on another new option.
