Joshua Barrie believes Rangers will make some defensive additions in the upcoming January transfer window and will follow a similar blueprint to the one that brought Hamza Igamane to the club.
The Gers have been under a microscope this season thanks to their performances and now that John Souttar has been ruled out for several weeks, reinforcement is likely to be needed at the back.
Speaking on the Scottish Football Podcast (17 December), journalist Barrie shared his thoughts on what Philippe Clement might look to do in the upcoming January transfer window, using Hamza Igamane as a good example of what the Ibrox outfit should try to do in the future when it comes to signings.
“January, they [Rangers] need to make additions and I believe they will,” he said.
“At centre-back, the news of John Souttar being out for a number of weeks was not a welcome one for Clement and there are signs I think in their summer recruitment that they are following through on these new ideas [exploring new markets for transfers] and someone like Hamza Igamane has been a good example of that in recent weeks.”
Rangers and Philippe Clement need reinforcement in January
Even if Souttar wasn’t ruled out for a few weeks due to injury, it still feels like Clement should have been exploring the market, especially if he wants to mount a late title charge.
Granted, the club currently sit third in the league and are 11 points adrift of league leaders Celtic but if things go their way and they continue their impressive league form, the tides could be turned in their favour.
Although it’s a massive long shot and there’s still plenty of work that needs to be done within the Gers’ squad, some extra faces would no doubt help Clement’s case tenfold.
If they want to be challenging for the title and across other competitions such as the Europa League and the Scottish League Cup, Rangers more or less need two equally strong players in each position.
That, however, is a luxury only certain teams such as their arch-rivals Celtic can afford and unless some first-team members are offloaded by the Ibrox outfit, it’s hard to see how more than one or two new players could come in.
In other Rangers news, the Gers now have a Premier League midfielder on their radar ahead of the January transfer window.
