Journo View: Tottenham summer transfer plans collapsed after missing out on 'main target'

Dan Bardell believes Tottenham had to change their transfer plans for the summer window after Conor Gallagher joined Atletico Madrid.

It has been no secret that Ange Postecoglou’s side have shown an interest in signing the Chelsea academy graduate in recent transfer windows [Football London].

Spurs missed out on the England international after he confirmed a move to La Liga as Joao Felix returned to Stamford Bridge.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell thinks that the 24-year-old was a key target and scuppered transfer plans in North London by moving elsewhere.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Bardell said: “I think Gallagher was the one they wanted but he’s ended up in Spain.

“I don’t think there are many other names they considered but it has been clear over the last few windows that Gallagher was their main target.

“I think they’ll still look at what they’ve got an be ok with it, you can’t tell how well the young players are going to do.

“We’ll know more in January because they’ll have played a lot even by that point.“

Postecoglou’s side are heading towards the 30 August deadline with a lack of true Premier League experience in his midfield.

Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur are arguably their best options but the latter has been inconsistent due to his injury concerns.

This pair has been complemented by Pape Sarr and has now been added to by the signings of Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray.

As a result, there is a general lack of senior football experience in the squad which a signing like Gallagher would have added.

Missing out on him was a blow and it seems that Spurs haven’t recovered well to find an alternative ahead of the transfer deadline.
