Keith Hackett was surprised with Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola’s comments after the draw with West Ham after he singled out the referee.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former PGMOL chief, ex-FIFA, and Premier League referee says that managers can “seek clarification on various decisions” but the way Iraola did was surprising to him.
The Cherries drew with the Hammers after Enes Unal scored a wonderful free kick in the last minute to rescue a point.
However, the Spanish coach was furious that Tyler Adams was deemed to have handballed a cross from Aaron Wan-Bissaka for West Ham’s first goal.
Chris Kavanagh initially missed the incident, but VAR advised a pitch-side consultation and awarded a penalty.
Iraola said after the game: “I am very disappointed with the penalty.
“When we spoke with the referees at the start of the season, the instruction was not to tell our defenders to defend with their hands behind their back.
They said it was not natural and they gave these instructions and said don’t worry when I asked if it would lead to penalties and said, ‘It won’t cost you’”.
Bournemouth need to be ‘appropriate’ when consulting referees
Hacklett exclusively told Football Insider: “I am rather surprised with the reaction of this manager and his comments. I carried out many pre-season meetings with Managers that operate at Premier League and Football league level.
“There will I have no doubt, been a presentation accompanied with examples of challenges that would or would not be sanctioned. Managers are always invited to ask questions and to seek guidance.
“The challenge resulted in an appropriate sanction, and a manager who wishes to seek clarification on various decisions can pick up the phone and seek further clarification from Howard Webb”.
Bournemouth have had a few good performances against big teams, the likes of beating Arsenal and Tottenham which put more pressure on Ange Postecoglou.
Despite his erratic actions, the hierarchy at the club are very much in favour of their coach. Football Insider revealed they want to secure the future of the manager with a new long-term deal.
They face Man United next in a tricky away tie on Sunday 22 December, but the team will be confident pulling off another upset.
In other news, Bournemouth have responded to Liverpool’s interest in their key player.
