Keith Jackson admits he feels sorry for Rangers interim chairman John Gilligan as he tries to keep fans informed about the goings on at Ibrox.

Gilligan assumed the role of interim chairman in September after John Bennett was forced to leave his role due to health problems.

The 72-year-old addressed some issues at Rangers to fans via a long statement on 16 October and spoke about some reports he’d seen about the club lacking leadership due to the recent departures of some backroom staff.

Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (16 October), Jackson said he believes the message Gilligan tried to share in the statement seemed “hollow”.

“I kind of feel a bit sorry for John Gilligan. He’s front of house and he’s having to put his head above the parapet here,” Jackson said.

“He’s clearly trying to connect with the Rangers fans and keep them informed but the message just sounds a bit hollow”.

Philippe Clement needs to keep the form of Rangers consistent

The Gers’ season got off to a fairly slow start. The Ibrox outfit dropped points to Hearts on the opening day and then they lost against Celtic on 1 September.

Since their 3-0 loss against the Bhoys, things have started to get better for Philippe Clement’s men but the consistency isn’t quite there yet.

Their recent results in the Scottish Premiership have been stellar but the 4-1 Europa League defeat against Lyon left a lot to be desired.

There’s plenty of time for things to change, of course, and the gulf in money between Rangers and the Ligue 1 outfit needs to be considered, but if Clement wants to win the Gers title number 56 then they’ll have to find some consistency.

Celtic’s team isn’t as strong as Lyon’s of course, but the ability of Brendan Rodgers’ squad seems to be levels above the Gers’.

Plenty of change has been afoot at Ibrox this term and if things don’t start to work consistently, Clement’s men will likely find themselves in Celtic’s shadows once again.
