Rangers will receive a transfer windfall from the sale of Rory Wilson if he agrees to leave Aston Villa in January, according to The Athletic.

The news outlet reported on Friday [18 October] that the 18-year-old has received offers from several European sides prepared to offer the forward an excess wage of £20,000 per week.

Wilson departed Ibrox for Aston Villa in 2022 for a fee of £350,000 with add-ons totalling an overall package of £1m after he impressed in the academy ranks at Rangers, scoring 49 goals in one season before the move.

The Gers struck a last-minute deal with the Premier League side to avoid FIFA’s resolution committee determining Wilson’s future and, negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause in the sale.

How much do Rangers stand to profit from Rory Wilson sale?

While Wilson will be free to negotiate a free transfer to a European side in January, due to his age, Aston Villa will receive a compensation fee should he decide to leave Villa Park.

The forward has been on the books in Birmingham for the past three years earning approximately £74,000 per annum, meaning a European side with a category-one status academy will need to fork out a £224,000 compensation package.

Rangers will pocket £22,400 from the 10 per cent sell-on clause, this may not be the most eye-watering agreement, but it certainly shows a sense of business prowess from a club riddled with financial insecurities.

Priority number one for Rangers is to bridge the gap between themselves and Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership, it will take time before Philippe Clement can lead a side capable of winning trophies once again but it will take a period of consistently generating funds to achieve.

The Light Blues have taken a step in the right direction, announcing the “biggest” deal in Scottish football with the Kindred Group set to earn the club £3 million per year [Four Lads].

Rangers will remain in the shadow of Celtic should the financial situation at Ibrox fail to improve, small deals such as the Wilson sell-on clause add up in the long run, and with more transfer business expected in the upcoming windows, Clement must keep this in mind when moving on players from Glasgow in the future.
