Barry Ferguson has praised Rangers star John Souttar as a “shining light” in what has been a poor start to the season for the Gers.
Souttar has played every minute of league action for Phillippe Clement’s side so far this season and demonstrated a high level of performance consistently.
Ferguson was full of praise for the Scotland international, in an opinion piece posted on the Daily Record (18 October).
He said: “But amongst all the doom and gloom, one man in particular is providing my old club with a bit of a shining light. Big John Souttar has been through the ringer himself over the years with all sorts of potentially career-threatening injuries.
“From the day he arrived at Rangers, it’s felt like he’s been fighting a constant battle just to get himself up to full speed and get some regular games under his belt. And that’s why I’m genuinely so pleased for him now that he’s finally emerging as the central defender that the rest of us always hoped he would become.
“Souttar has been a real stand out for Philippe Clement since the start of the campaign – it’s fair to say he’s probably the most consistent performer in the Belgian’s squad. So there was something really satisfying about seeing him reclaim his place in Scotland’s defence against Croatia and Portugal and reproduce that same form in a dark blue shirt.”
John Souttar is key for Rangers
Despite Rangers being five points behind the leading duo of Aberdeen and Celtic, there have still been positives arising from the start of the campaign and Souttar is arguably the biggest.
The Scotsman has been an influential figure in the heart of Clement’s defence and he was able to carry his club form into the international break where he was awarded the man of the match award for his performance in Scotland’s goalless draw with Portugal.
His ability in the air is solid but perhaps his range of passing is what often shines the most.
According to FotMob, he has boasted a remarkable 92.3 per cent pass accuracy for Rangers this season.
Despite only joining the club during the 22/23 season, Souttar has already established himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet and should Rangers have ambitions of closing the gap at the top, he will be crucial in making that happen.
