Keith Jackson believes that it was “blindingly obvious” Rangers should have sold James Tavernier after the 2021/22 season.
The Gers made their way to the Europa League final under Giovanni van Bronkchorst that campaign with Tavernier as captain.
There were a plethora of teams vying for the transfer of the right-back after their outstanding run with multi-million fees mooted.
While speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (12 September) Jackson shared that the Gers should’ve “cashed in” while his stock was so high.
“They’re run so well [Celtic] when you compare to the situation that comes up time and time again at Rangers when they’re losing players at the end of their contracts and selling them for buttons,” he said.
“If Rangers were a serious outfit, the season that Tavernier skippered Rangers to the Europa League final and was the top scorer for the competition, they should have cashed in on him that summer.
“It’s blindingly obvious and Rangers are sat there scratching their heads and wondering ‘How can we get a player trading model?’”
James Tavernier needs to prove his worth to Rangers
Following a summer of uncertainty Tavernier looks set to stay put at Ibrox until at least January.
Philippe Clement has had a major clear out of his ranks across the summer window with many of the club’s high earners being shipped out for younger variants.
John Lundstram is an example of this as the former Sheffield United man has been replaced with 21-year-old Connor Barron for the 2024/25 campaign.
Clement likely had a few players in mind in terms of replacements for the Englishman but despite interest from both Turkey and Saudi Arabia across the window, Tavernier has remained at Ibrox.
While the defender scores a high volume of goals for the club, his abject performance in the Old Firm derby debacle shows he is a player whose star is on the wane.
It’s still early in the season of course but if things don’t change soon, things could go from bad to worse for the Gers.
In other Rangers news, an update has been shared regarding the transfer fee for Connor Barron.
