Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Asia is the “most fertile area” for takeover interest at Rangers and he “knows” one consortium has expressed an “interest” in buying the club.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – told major shareholder Dave King to “get on the phone quickly” and sound out potential bids.
Wyness revealed to Football Insider last month (22 September) that a “Far East investor” is weighing up a potential takeover at Rangers.
The Ibrox club are struggling on and off the pitch at present after the departure of several key board members in recent months.
Rangers are without a long-term chairman, CEO or head of football operations – while Philippe Clement’s side are struggling to keep pace with Aberdeen and Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race.
Asian Rangers takeover is most likely outcome, says Wyness
Football Insider revealed on Monday (21 October) that Rangers are stepping up plans to sack Clement in the wake of their defeat against Kilmarnock.
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Dave King better get on the phone quickly.
“I don’t know who is contacts are but I’m sure he’s looking to see who he can get hold of.
“I’ve always felt there will be an Asian connection.
“I know there has been interest from Asia, but I don’t know whether that will be solidified – my contact hasn’t been able to get me any more information.
“I think that will be the most fertile area for Rangers.”
