Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Chelsea will be searching to secure a big-money in-house sponsorship deal.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the ban of gambling sponsorships next year will be a “problem” for the Blues.
Chelsea have started their second consecutive season without a front-of-shirt sponsor after their deal with Infinite Athlete expired.
Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (2 October) that the London club rejected a “lucrative offer” from a gambling company for the space in August.
Meanwhile, clubs like Newcastle and Man City have secured lucrative agreements with companies linked to their ownership groups.
Chelsea searching for big-money in-house sponsor, says Wyness
Wyness insisted Chelsea will be keen to match their rivals and bring in big revenue.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “What will be interesting is when we see the gambling companies come off the shirts at the end of the season.
“That’s gonna be a problem.
“There will be a lot of shirt real estate back on the market.
“Chelsea will be searching for any related parties they can to get the maximum value.
“The market will readjust because for the bottom 10 clubs, at least, gambling companies have been the go-to.
“Now they’ll have to reinvent the marketplace. Related parties will dominate the marketplace, so we’ll have to see what these new rules are – if there are any at all.
“Clubs will have to adjust their sponsorship case around that.”
