'Most accomplished': Jamie Carragher names the PL boss he's convinced would be 'capable' of managing Liverpool

Liverpool took their time before announcing Arne Slot as their new manager.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed in January that he would be leaving the club at the end of the campaign. It was a real shock at the time, but the German felt it was the right decision.

Liverpool were linked with about a dozen managers in the following months, and after a lot of speculation, they decided to hand the job to Slot.

In his article in The Telegraph, Carragher has now claimed that another highly-rated manager has the ability to do the job at Anfield.

Jamie Carragher says Unai Emery is ‘capable’ of managing Liverpool

Unai Emery is one of the most accomplished managers in world football.

The Spaniard has won a total of 11 trophies in his career over the years, including five Europa League titles while he was managing in Spain.

He has done a remarkable job at Aston Villa as well since taking charge of the club – he has led them into the Champions League, which is an extraordinary achievement.

Emery was linked with a Liverpool job before they went after Slot, but nobody really saw him as an ideal fit for the Reds or any other big club.

Carragher seems surprised by that, and he believes that the Spaniard is actually capable of managing huge sides like Liverpool.

He wrote: “Because of Emery, Villa have become a notable scalp. The Spaniard’s unhappy spell at Arsenal should be a distant memory. Fortunately for Villa, it would appear it isn’t for rival Premier League and European clubs.

“One of the surprises of the summer is how few of the elite teams seeking a new coach made a pitch for Emery.

“He would have been capable of taking over at Liverpool, Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Chelsea, while Manchester United must have considered his qualities during that period when they were contemplating whether to keep faith with Erik ten Hag.

“Based on his experience and CV, Emery is second only to Guardiola as the most accomplished and successful coach currently working in the Premier League.”

Emery at Liverpool would’ve been a huge risk

Emery deserves a lot of praise for the work he has done at clubs like Sevilla, Villarreal and now Aston Villa.

The Spaniard took those clubs to a whole new level, and that was what earned him opportunities at big sides like Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal.

However, Emery’s spells at those two clubs were a disaster.

He didn’t do particularly well at PSG despite winning the Ligue 1 in his final season, while his time at Arsenal was really, really bad, especially his second campaign.

That shows when the pressure of a big club falls on Emery’s shoulders, he crumbles. But, when he’s at clubs where there isn’t much pressure to achieve big things, he thrives.

At Liverpool, it would’ve likely been the former, which is probably why the Reds decided against making a move to appoint him as Klopp’s successor.
