Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Newcastle United will need to sell players in future to offset the arrival of Marc Guehi.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested sales could come in January or next summer to avoid breaching financial rules and incurring a points deduction.

Football Insider revealed on Tuesday (6 August) that Newcastle are now in advanced talks to sign Crystal Palace defender Guehi.

The Tyneside giants have agreed personal terms with the England international, who will cost upwards of £60million.

Newcastle escaped selling Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon or Bruno Guimaraes in time to be included in the club’s accounts for the 2023-24 campaign despite heavy speculation.

Newcastle could sell top asset to offset Guehi fee, says Wyness

However, Wyness claimed the Magpies may have already planned to sell one of their top assets to offset Guehi’s big-money fee.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They’ll be okay for last season’s books.

“But for PSR, they may already be thinking about sales for next year which will balance the books after they sign Guehi.

“That could be in the January window or at the end of this season.

“Guehi would be a great acquisition for them, he’d fit very well into Eddie Howe’s team.

“I think they’re ok for the PSR numbers at the moment, but they’ll have to think about who they may sell to cover this big-money incoming.

“That’s how I think they’re looking at it.

“If they get Guehi, they’ll be happy – because he improves their squad.”
