Keith Wyness drops Rangers board verdict after Lundstram backlash

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Rangers were right to let John Lundstram run down his contract at the club.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted it was important to maintain “stability” in January with the Gers still in contention for the Scottish Premiership title.

Rangers confirmed last week (1 June) that Lundstram has departed the club following the expiry of his contract.

Football Insider collected fan reaction to the midfielder’s exit on Saturday (2 June), with some supporters angry that he wasn’t sold in the last two transfer windows for a fee.

Rangers have also allowed the likes of Borna Barisic, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos to walk away from Ibrox at the end of their contracts in the last two years.

Rangers took Lundstram ‘gamble’ in January, says Wyness

Former Sheffield United star Lundstram, who started 49 of his 53 appearances this term, is being monitored by English clubs.

Wyness claimed this summer will be “crucial” for Philippe Clement and Rangers.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Rangers were still competing in January.

“It was really only towards the end of the season when things started to fall apart.

“I think the board were correct that it was worth the gamble to keep Lundstram for those extra six months.

“It hasn’t paid off, but certainly that gamble was taken to try and maintain stability in the squad.

“Things could’ve been very different in the final couple of months of the season.

“I don’t blame the board for that decision in January at all. It didn’t work out – and now this is a very crucial off-season for Rangers.”
