Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested Liverpool are unlikely to make their first signing until July.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Arne Slot is still undergoing a “bedding-in process” at Anfield.
Slot was appointed to replace Jurgen Klopp towards the end of the 2023-24 campaign and started work at Liverpool earlier this month.
Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes have also been installed at the top of the Reds’ new-look transfer team.
Thiago, Joel Matip and Adrian are all set to be released on 30 June but Liverpool are yet to agree a summer signing.
Liverpool to seal first summer deal next month, says Wyness
Wyness insisted he has no concerns about the Reds’ ability to build a “competitive side”.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They’re not under a PSR issue, so 30 June is not a date which means anything to them regarding incomings or outgoings.
“They’ll know their targets, but, from what I hear, I don’t expect to see much work from them until July.
“They’ll be getting their heads together to get the right data and knowledge together about their targets, making sure those players will be cohesive in this team.
“He’ll have the full support to do what he wants. It’s normal to have a bedding-in process with a new manager like this.
“Liverpool have a very well-oiled machine and he will fit in well.
“I don’t have any concerns, they’ll end up with a very competitive side next season. Slot will be trying to change things season-on-season.
“He’ll keep refreshing the squad. Klopp, when he had great success, kept the same players for seasons at a time.
“Slot will try something different, and I think he’ll prove a great appointment.”
