Ibrox View: Clement must learn from Beale mistake and sanction sale of Rangers attacker

If last season was Philippe Clement’s introduction into life as Rangers manager, the upcoming campaign will be a true test of his ability.

The pressure will immediately be on the Belgian to continue the good work of the last whilst also further developing his side in Glasgow to try and break Celtic’s hold on the Scottish Premiership title.

Unsuccessful managers don’t tend to last long in Scotland, but Clement has the opportunity to learn from the mistakes of his predecessor Michael Beale during the summer transfer window.

While a number of factors played into the Englishman’s sacking last year, one thing he and the management team at Ibrox were repeatedly criticised for was allowing players to run down their contracts and leave on free transfers.

Valuable assets like Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos left Scotland as free agents in Beale’s first summer in charge whilst he wasn’t able to facilitate moves for the likes of John Lundstram and Borna Barisic 12 months ago.

Both players departed as free agents at the end of the Premiership season as the Light Blues missed the opportunity to cash in on players who could have been sold for reasonable fees.

Clement now has the perfect chance to show how he is different to Beale as he has a decision to make over Scott Wright’s future in the transfer window.

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly keen to secure the winger’s signature this summer with manager Danny Rohl an admirer of the Scotsman and the Gers are willing to sell him for the right fee [Daily Record, 29 June].

While he is unlikely to garner a huge transfer fee, any money brought into the club would be excellent as it would be able to be invested back into Clement’s side this summer.

The Belgian has started brightly at Ibrox, but over the next few months, he has to show supporters that he is the man to transform the Gers off and on the field and securing a fee for Wright would be the perfect start.
