Keith Wyness: Everton already weighing up '60,000-seat' new stadium expansion

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted the club’s new stadium should be expanded to a capacity of more than 60,000.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed any changes won’t be made in the “short-term” despite Dan Friedkin already looking into the matter.

According to The Athletic (25 October), there have been “whispers” of the incoming Friedkin Group ownership increasing the size of the state-of-the-art new ground.

There is reportedly some scope to expand the east side of the £750million, 52,888-seater stadium – if there is “genuine demand” for it.

Everton’s new home will open in 2025 with test events to be held in the new year ahead of the official move in for the start of the 2025-26 campaign.

Everton need 60,000-seater stadium, says Wyness

Wyness claimed any expansion will be a “big structural development”.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There’s a lot to consider.

“I do believe we should be looking at 60,000 at some stage.

“There are potential architectural moves which could make that happen, and it’s an exciting thing to consider.

“It’s great news that Friedkin is looking at things like that already, even if it’s not going to be in the short-term.

“We’re going to have a number of years in Bramley-Moore as it stands before any expansion goes ahead.

“It’ll be a big structural development on one side. There is limited scope in some areas due to the dock.

“We’ll see what has been built into the plans.”
