Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness believes Leadenhall will approve Dan Friedkin’s proposal to settle the debts owed to 777 Partners.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – suggested the London-based company is purely looking to protect itself in the ongoing legal battle.
Everton confirmed in a statement on 23 September The Friedkin Group has reached an agreement to purchase owner Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1 per cent stake in the club.
The deal could be held up, however, after Leadenhall has insisted the New York court in the case against 777 needs to approve the settlement of the £200million loan provided to the Merseysiders by the US investment firm.
But A-CAP, who had been the lenders behind 777 Partners’ operations but who were now in the process of clawing back some of its money from 777-owned assets, has argued the Friedkin deal doesn’t need the court or Leadenhall’s approval.
Leadenhall to approve Everton takeover as legal battle continues
Wyness suggested Leadenhall is just trying to ensure the assets its pursuing in the case remain intact.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Leadenhall are taking that stance just purely because they want to be sure that there’s no way that the assets that A-CAP have got, which is the Everton loan and potentially leading to equity in Everton, can go nowhere else.
“It’s to make sure A-CAP don’t lose it in some other way into some of their other schemes that they have going on.
“I think Leadenhall will accept the Friedkin proposal to court.
“But they are just trying to be sure that the assets they are going after are all there and intact to be held.
“I think we’ll be okay on that one.”
