Keith Wyness: Liverpool star's £84m deal could be blocked

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed the rulebook would need to be “addressed quickly” if Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold were to invest at Nantes.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted there is “definitely an issue” and a “conflict” with that potential investment.

L’Equipe reported last week (20 September) that Alexander-Arnold was leading an investment group including his father, Michael Arnold, in a bid to take over Nantes.

An initial package worth £84million reportedly made up the offer, including an up-front investment of £67million.

Nantes’ current owner Waldemar Kita has since spoken out about the report, local press: “Trent Alexander-Arnold? But I don’t even know him! I just spoke to my lawyer, I asked him: ‘Who is this guy?’”

The right-back was part of a group that invested in Formula One team Alpine in 2023 alongside numerous stars from the world of sport.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I did read that story, it has been denied that Alexander-Arnold is interested in becoming the sole owner.

“But he and his team could be part of a syndicate.

“It’s set me thinking that there are no rules about players owning clubs.

“How does that affect him if he were to play against Nantes? I don’t believe there are any rules about that, and it would need to be addressed quickly.

“There is definitely an issue. If Trent and Liverpool drew Nantes in a European game, how would that work out?

“It’s a conflict, and one that hasn’t been envisioned.

“He’d only be a part-owner with little control, but it’s an interesting scenario.”
