Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness believes Rangers will look to sell a couple of players in the January transfer window as they aim to cut costs.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Scottish giants can’t afford to get rid of too many players.
Rangers have had a whirlwind past few months after key board members have moved on, with Fraser Thornton recently appointed as their new chairman and Patrick Stewart as CEO.
There has been speculation surrounding Philippe Clement’s position, with his side currently sitting 11 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table.
But the Glasgow side are well-placed to qualify for the Europa League knockout rounds after claiming 11 points from their opening six matches.
Rangers posted a record revenue of £88.3million for 2023-24, but their net losses increased to £17.2million.
Philippe Clement under pressure to cut Rangers costs
Wyness expects the club to try and move some players on in January following their financial struggles.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “Business and football is very simple.
“You keep your costs low and you get your revenues high. It’s that simple.
“You have got to do one or the other. I don’t think the revenue side has been too rosy for Rangers, so I’m afraid cost-cutting is one of the only routes.
“But they are going to have to be very careful in terms of the balance of that squad.
“I don’t think it’s that lengthy of a squad right now and they can’t afford to do too much, but there’s got to be something done on the cost side.
“I am sure there will be a couple that will go.
“Clement must know his squad by now and he must have had the pressure from the board to cut some costs, so we will see how they play it.”
