'I Don't Understand It' - Stefan Borson drops strong verdict on Man City joining Unify League

Manchester City and their fellow Premier League clubs will be cautious about committing to the Unify League after the new plans have been revealed.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider there is currently no indication any of the top-flight sides would be interested in joining the competition.

A22, the Madrid-based organisers of the original European Super League (ESL), announced on 17 December the competition has changed its name to the Unify League.

The initial ESL plan collapsed within 72 hours of its announcement in April 2021 after several clubs, including Man City, Man United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham, dropped out following widespread criticism.

A22 has claimed the Unify League now favours an “open competition”, with 96 European clubs to be handed the chance to take part across four leagues.

Man City unlikely to be interested in joining Unify League

Borson insisted the Unify League would have to replace Uefa competitions due to the lack of space in the calendar.

“I think there will be a lot more caution from any English team,” Borson told Football Insider.

“I don’t really understand it. None of it seems to make sense to me how they think they are going to be able to justify free-to-air.

“If it’s free-to-air, then you have got to ask why would the broadcaster want to pay for the rights. How are they going to make their money? It’s not going to be via advertising during the breaks.

“It looks dead on arrival at the moment, but we have to wait and see what the terms are.

“You have also got to ask yourself anyway how it’s different from established Uefa competitions, which are extremely well organised as a competition.

“Why would any of those Premier League clubs be interested in a start-up competition? There is just no indication as to why they would be.

“I am very sceptical on the Unify League at the moment, but we will see how it pans out.

“It’s certainly a very different proposition from the Super League anyway, it’s not really a Super League.

“It’s really just an enlarged or similar Uefa competition, just slightly changed in terms of the format. This would have to replace Uefa competitions.

“There is no space in the calendar to have something that sits alongside all of the Uefa stuff.”
