Keith Wyness: Rangers board 'stinks' after what they've done to Philippe Clement

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has accused Rangers of failing to properly back under-pressure manager Phillipe Clement.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Belgian hasn’t had the “support” or the “right quality on the board” to become a success.

Pressure is mounting on Clement after Rangers’ shocking start in the Scottish Premiership which already sees them nine points adrift of Celtic and Aberdeen.

However, the Glasgow giants have started positively in the Europa League and will face their Old Firm rivals in the Scottish League Cup final next month.

The Rangers boss signed a new deal at Ibrox in the summer, keeping him at the club until 2028.

Rangers boss Clement ‘hasn’t had the support required’, says Wyness

Wyness insisted the club’s on-pitch form stems from problems in the boardroom.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I did think they would make a move with Clement, to be honest.

“But that would have been wrong, right now. He hasn’t been properly backed.

“He’s not had the support required, he’s not had the right quality on the board – and if they tried to deflect the poor results on the manager, that would’ve been wrong.

“For Rangers, even on the football side right now – instability is the last thing they need.

“They’ve got to keep their nerve and sort it out at the top level, because that’s where it stinks.

“They’ve got to sort it with investment, a new board – and a new owner, if possible.

“In crisis, there’s always an opportunity for a potential buyer.”
