Keith Wyness: Rangers set for 'painful' Ibrox fire sale

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has tipped Rangers for a “painful” rebuild in the next year after their Champions League failure.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed maintaining second place in the Scottish Premiership is now the “goal” for the Ibrox club.

Rangers failed to qualify for the Champions League proper for the second straight season after losing against Dynamo Kyiv across two legs earlier this month.

Football Insider revealed on Wednesday (14 August) that Philippe Clement’s side have missed out on earning an extra £40million in revenue following their elimination.

The Gers last won the Scottish Premiership in the 2020-21 campaign under Steven Gerrard.

Rangers rebuild ‘will be painful’ as huge exodus expected

Wyness insisted now is the time for a “big squad revamp” at Ibrox.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They’re going to have to look at a strategic rebuild.

“That will involve selling players.

“You’d hope they can maintain second place in the Scottish Premiership even with a reduced squad, and they’ve got to take their time and make that their goal now.

“The January window and next summer is where there will probably be a big squad revamp.

“They’ve got to blood some of the academy talent and just look a strategic way forward.

“It’ll be painful, but they’ve got to look at it and get the resources together.

“That may take some time as well.”
