Keith Wyness: Aston Villa & Monchi 'chasing late forward signing' after Duran twist

Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted his former side will be desperate to add goals to their side in the final week of the transfer window.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs –insisted attacking reinforcements are necessary despite a twist in the future of Jhon Duran, who now looks set to stay despite links with West Ham and Chelsea in the off-season.

Duran replaced Ollie Watkins on Sunday (18 August) and scored the winner in a 2-1 victory against West Ham at the London Stadium.

Aston Villa have been chasing Joao Felix throughout the summer window but have missed out, with the Portgual international re-joining Chelsea on Wednesday (21 August).

The Midlands giants return to the Champions League next month and will have to navigate eight group games to book a place in the knockout stages.

Monchi and Aston Villa to chase last-gasp forward deal, says Wyness

Wyness insisted Villa need more firepower to protect against a potential Watkins injury and improve the squad after Moussa Diaby’s Saudi Pro League switch.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Duran knocked in a decent goal at the weekend.

“But I think it’s true that Aston Villa need someone else to support Ollie Watkins, who is a great striker.

“The club and Monchi will be chasing someone before the window shuts.

“They’re in the Champions League and they want to stay there, as well as getting past the group stage.

“If anything were to happen to Watkins, Villa would be looking pretty sparse in attack.

“Duran may be the answer but a lot of Villa fans haven’t been happy with him. Of course, it’s most important what the manager thinks.”
