Keith Wyness reveals real transfer truth at Man City after 115 charges latest

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted the lack of summer spending at Man City had nothing to do with their ongoing 115 charges battle.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed “money isn’t the issue” and the modest window came because City already have an “embarrassment of riches”.

According to Transfermarkt, Man City banked almost £100million in the summer transfer window by selling the likes of Julian Alvarez and Joao Cancelo.

Savinho and Ilkay Gundogan were the only two arrivals for the English champions.

Man City and the Premier League started their face-off in secret in central London last week (16 September), with the 115 charges hearing expected to go on for around 10 weeks.

The case is the result of a four-year investigation into City’s financial conduct stretching back to 2008 – with the Etihad Stadium club insisting they have done nothing wrong.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think it’s anything to do with money.

“Money isn’t the issue. If anything, they’ve got too much – that’s what this Premier League case is about.

“They’ve been very good and prudent in the transfer market this year.

“They’ve already got an embarrassment of riches so it was more about tinkering with the squad and freshening up.

“There was no need to go mad and spend more.”
