Philippe Clement’s job at Rangers is at risk after going 1-0 behind against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Wednesday night, according to Kris Boyd.
Nicky Devlin’s 31st-minute goal put the Dons ahead at half-time but a missed penalty by Jamie McGrath could have made matters worse for the ailing Gers.
Jimmy Thelin’s side would go nine points clear of the Light Blues if they manage to hold onto their lead in the North-East of Scotland and Boyd claims that’s unacceptable and would lead to Clement losing his job.
Speaking on Sky Sports Football at half-time on Wednesday night (09:06pm, 30 October), Boyd said: “They are so bad, it’s unbelievable.
“We touched on this at the top of the show but Philippe Clement has got 45 minutes to save his job here – that is a fact.
“It cannot happen for Rangers to go nine points behind Aberdeen.”
Rangers to sack Philippe Clement if Aberdeen win
Clement may have started life well at Ibrox last year when he won the Scottish League Cup title but he’s proceeded to bottle a title bid and managed to oversee the Gers becoming the third-best team in Scotland.
Celtic being miles ahead is one thing. Aberdeen being a similar distance ahead approaching November is another thing completely.
Clement’s future is rightly coming into question. However, the Gers need to realise that constantly sacking managers every November isn’t going to do them any favours in the long-run.
If Clement goes, it’ll be another painstaking process to find a replacement and then he’ll want to rip up the playing squad the Belgian has put together over the last 12 months with the help of Nils Koppen.
Rangers need to accept that Clement isn’t the main issue here. The main issue is that recruitment, year after year, has been shocking. Senior players haven’t bothered turning up when they’re needed and the constant shenanigans behind the scenes at board level have also muddied the waters.
Clement isn’t absolved of blame – he’s definitely one of the main instigators of this write-off of a season.
But sacking him is hardly going to fix anything.
In other Rangers news, Aberdeen fans were outraged by one John Beaton decision at Pittodrie.
