Barry Ferguson believes Creag Roberton leaving Rangers is not as big of a problem as some fans are making it out to be.
It emerged earlier this week that Roberton was set to step down from his role as the club’s director of football operations (The Scottish Sun, 8 October).
With this being the latest of other behind-the-scenes departures, there is concern among fans about Rangers’ stability.
Ferguson, though, has taken a glass-half-full approach, saying that it leaves the door open for the club’s new chairman and chief executive to make an appointment of their own.
Writing in his column for the latest print edition of the Daily Record (11 October, pg 51), the ex-Gers ace explained: “This week’s news director of football operations Creag Robertson was stepping down has sparked another wave of groans but for me it doesn’t have to be seen as the latest crisis point.
“The club are clearly going through a process where changes at the top of the Marble Staircase are being made.
“Creag has decided it’s time to move on and pursue opportunities elsewhere but that just offers whoever comes in as the new chairman and chief executive the chance to install their own people.”
Rangers fans right to be worried about Ibrox exits
While Ferguson is unfazed by Robertson’s exit, the fans are right to be worried about the recent proceedings at Ibrox.
John Gilligan is serving as a stand-in chairman after John Bennett stepped down on health grounds last month.
Rangers had already been hit by CEO James Bisgrove’s sudden move to Saudi Arabia in May.
What is more concerning is that those two had only held their positions for a year at Ibrox and the same has happened with Robertson, who assumed office in June 2023.
It appears the Glasgow giants are struggling for stability on and off the pitch at the moment.
The club have had a similar pattern with managers in recent years, with Steven Gerrard, Michael Beale, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Philippe Clement taking charge.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Rangers as they now look to fill three key behind-the-scenes roles during the season.
In other Rangers news, former Nigeria striker Benedict Akwuegbu has sent a message to Cyriel Dessers after his latest international snub.
