'Will have to move on' - Chris Jack names pair to leave Rangers in 'Lost' generation

Alex Lowry and Leon King will have to leave Rangers in the near-future as they will not now become first-team players, says Chris Jack.

Speaking on the Rangers Review Morning Briefing on 11 October he indicated the pair of home grown players are part of a “lost” generation of Gers talent which the club will no longer benefit from, while questioning whether the likes of Bailey Rice and Zak Lovelace from the next generation are heading the same way.

Adam Devine is another whom Jack said would likely be on the way out sooner rather than later, as the Light Blues have failed to get a return on a number of youngsters who much was expected of.

Jack said (22m 10s): “We’ve seen with the likes of Lowry and King, it’s not worked out for them, they will have to move on. They’re not going to be Rangers first-team players.

“That generation, you can also include the likes of Adam Devine in that as well, that generation’s almost been lost, Ranger are not going to get anything out of that generation.

“They can’t afford the same thing to happen with the next one. You think of Rice and Lovelace being the two higher-profile ones.”

Alex Lowry and Leon King set for Rangers exits

A supply of talent from the academy has been lacking for some time now and has contributed to the drop in standards at Ibrox.

Ross McCausland is a semi-regular feature under Philippe Clement and Liam Kelly was brought back to the club this summer as second-choice keeper but there is little imprint from Auchenhowie on the senior side.

Lowry, 21, looked like he might have a last chance to establish himself heading into this season with the field clearing ahead of him, but he was seemingly bombed out of contention after the pre-season loss at Birmingham and has been stuck in the B Team ever since.

Despite scoring a “simply ridiculous” goal for the reserves [4 Lads Had A Dream, 14 August] there has been no hint of the manager giving him a chance, and with £3.4million spent on Nedim Bajrami [Sky Sports, 30 August] plus Ianis Hagi’s own exile ending in the weeks since there looks to be no way in for Lowry.

King, 20, has 37 first-team appearances to his name, but since a pair of starts to close out last season Clement clearly sees him well down the pecking order as he isn’t currently even making the bench.

If it has been a struggle for Dujon Sterling to get a look in at right-back past James Tavernier then Devine, 21, has next to no chance.

In recent seasons the turnover of managers surely hasn’t helped as homegrown youngsters only seem to get thrown in as an absolute last resort during an injury crisis, without any obvious plan to develop them.

Both Rice and Lovelace are still 18 so still have some time on their sides, but when they have seven first-team appearances between them the signs aren’t especially encouraging.

And for Rice the inevitable comparisons with former Motherwell teammate Lennon Miller make the situation all the more stark, with the latter racking up 50 games under Stuart Kettlewell and now a highly-coveted target for the Gers [Open Goal, 26 September].
