King moots behind-the-scenes figure to decide on Tottenham future amid exit speculation

Bryan King believes Ryan Mason will need to decide whether or not he wishes to remain with Tottenham in the long-term.

The ex-Spurs scout claims it is up to the former midfielder to decide where his future in football lies.

It comes after Mason was in talks to take over the vacant managerial position at Anderlecht (via The Sun, 9 October, page 51).

The 33-year-old is set to remain in North London for the time being after ending talks with the Jupiler Pro League giants (via The Standard, 10 October).

However, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – still believes there is a decision to be made over the Spurs coach’s long-term future.

“It is up to Mason what he does now,” King said.

“Does he want to remain at Tottenham long-term, or is he still looking for another club to manage on his own? I’d have thought if Mason was doing well then he would move on.

“However, maybe he should remain focussed on the job he is currently doing. He is already with a big club in Tottenham. Either way, the time has come for him to make a decision.”

It looked as if Mason was close to leaving Tottenham, who were set to bag a fee (via HLN, 8 October).

The North London club were not going to stand in Mason’s way. However, in the end, he decided to stay, agreeing with Anderlecht that now was not the right time to make the move.

Therefore, it comes as a boost to Postecoglou and Spurs that they won’t now need to replace Mason.

However, Mason’s decision not to take the Anderlecht job doesn’t necessarily indicate he plans to remain with Spurs long-term. There are several reasons why he could have decided against the move to Belgium.

Perhaps he felt as though it was too big of a step at this point, and wants to manage a slightly smaller club first. Mason has experience managing Spurs on an interim basis, but not much.

Therefore, now that the door has opened once to a potential exit, it’ll be interesting to see what happens next should further opportunities arise.
