'Regular issue' - David Edgar raises concerns despite 'Very Good' Rangers win v Malmo

David Edgar was concerned by Rangers’ inability to finish off games after only managing to score one first-half goal against Malmo in their eventual 2-0 win.

Nedim Bajrami opened the scoring in the first minute in Sweden, following in after Cyriel Dessers smacked the post, though Philippe Clement’s side could not punish their opponents further.

The Gers had several chances to double their lead before substitute Ross McCausland put the game out of Malmo’s reach, firing home with just 15 minutes remaining at the Eleda Stadion.

Taking to X on Thursday (26 September), Edgar wrote at half-time: “Actually a very good away Euro performance but we should have put the game away and we haven’t. It’s a regular issue.”

Four Lads Had A Dream had a similar concern, writing via X [26 September]: “We’ve been brilliant – brilliant shape, effort & some of our moves have been great.

“The biggest frustration is, as always, that the game should be over. Should be out of sight.”

Rangers concerns emerge despite Europa League victory v Malmo

This is certainly an area Philippe Clement and his team need to look at and address, especially if they are serious about challenging for the Scottish Premiership and Europa League titles.

Getting off to a strong start in games is just as important as how you finish, and while it was great to see Bajrami score after just a few seconds, the lack of goals thereafter was disappointing.

While Malmo showed few signs of threatening Jack Butland’s goal, they did have one big chance ruled out, and any bigger teams may have taken their opportunities.

There are plenty of positives for Clement to take from the game, having secured all three points from their opening Europa League match, but it was not quite perfect in Sweden.

If Dessers had brought his shooting boots to the match, the Gers could have had a much more comfortable lead before the half-time break, but it feels unfair to blame just him.
