James Maddison’s performance for Tottenham against Crystal Palace didn’t warrant his early substitution by Ange Postecoglou.

Maddison, who is yet to complete a full 90 minutes for Spurs in the Premier League this season, was hooked in the 62nd minute of the Lilywhites’ 1-0 loss at Selhurst Park on Sunday (27 October).

Amid a stunted performance in front of goal from Postecoglou’s side, Maddison had been one of their most creative players, making the Australian’s lack of trust in his number 10 all the more baffling.

James Maddison impresses despite limited minutes for Tottenham

After Jean-Philippe Mateta opened the scoring with Palace’s winner in the 31st minute, Maddison was only given 31 more minutes himself to help get Spurs back on level terms.

In his 62 minutes on the pitch, the England playmaker had two attempts at goal, both of which were on target (100 per cent accuracy), generating 0.28 xGOT in total [FotMob].

Having two touches in the Palace box, Maddison threaded a further five passes into the final third, completing 78 per cent of 36 attempted passes and finding his target with a cross and long ball apiece.

The 27-year-old also wasn’t shy to help out at the back, completing five ball recoveries in total and putting in three defensive actions with a clearance and two attempted tackles.

One area in which Spurs continually came unstuck though was the midfield battle, which saw Maddison win five of his nine ground duels (56 per cent), but only one of two in the air [FotMob].

Given more time on the pitch to continue his effective attacking raids deep into the second half, who knows what Maddison could have produced, but until Postecoglou changes his mind on the midfielder’s durability, it could be some time before he entrusts Maddison to a full 90 minutes.
