Everton will likely bestow the honour of playing the first match at the Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium to either the Women’s side or the Under-21s, according to The Telegraph.
The newspaper reported via its website (28 December) that both Blues sides are in contention to play the first match at the Liverpool waterfront venue, with 10,000 supporters invited to attend.
Laing O’Rourke, the construction company responsible for the venue, handed the keys to the Blues on 10 December in preparation for the move [Liverpool Echo] – excitement is already building after a “magnificent” feature was revealed for the supporters to enjoy.
The Toffees will end their 132-year stay at Goodison Park at the end of the season.
Everton to hold first test match at Bramley-Moore Dock
While either the Women’s side or the U21s will miss out on the opportunity to cut the ribbon at Bramley-Moore Dock, whoever misses out on the occasion should not feel disheartened.
Everton will host a series of matches at the new venue while slowly increasing the capacity of spectators ahead of the grand reveal at the start of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.
The Women’s side would certainly benefit from the momentum-lifting fixture – Brian Sorensen is fighting a relegation battle in the Women’s Super League approaching the New Year as ACL injuries have ravaged his squad.
However, the U21s could also benefit from being chosen for the Bramley-Moore curtain raiser with supporters and/or Sean Dyche and The Friedkin Group in attendance.
Omari Benjamin has caught the eye with his displays for Paul Tait’s men this year and with question marks lingering around loan senior duo Jesper Lindstrom and Jack Harrison, the 18-year-old could lay down a statement for future first team opportunities with the Blues decision makers watching on.
There are plenty of positives to be gained from either side playing out the inaugural contest, but ultimately, the only thing that matters for the supporters is that Bramley-Moore Dock is ready to host the 2025-26 season with no glitches.
