Ange Postecoglou maintains the backing of the Tottenham board, according to Sami Mokbel.
Writing via the Daily Mail (28 December), Mokbel reports that while Postecoglou’s position is safe for now, there is an acknowledgement that results must improve, with the Australian having made a request ahead of January [via The Times, 27 December].
The Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool is emerging as key to Postecoglou’s prospects, with the 59-year-old having seen the odds of him being sacked slashed.
Defeat to Liverpool will be a factor in how the club views Postecoglou’s long-term future in North London, particularly if results in the league do not improve.
Ange Postecoglou to be sacked at Tottenham?
It looks as though Postecoglou could be in serious trouble at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Mokbel’s report implies that if Spurs don’t beat Liverpool and reach the Carabao Cup final, Postecoglou will likely be sacked, and considering his side just lost 6-3 to the Reds in the Premier League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (22 December), the Spurs boss is unlikely to be feeling too optimistic.
With managers such as Massimiliano Allegri out of work, Daniel Levy certainly does have options to turn toward. However, after all the chopping and changing in recent times, the decision to sack Postecoglou shouldn’t be taken lightly.
If the club do decide to cut ties with the ex-Celtic boss after less than two years, Levy needs to get his next appointment spot on.
However, there is no doubt that Spurs need to improve in the league, otherwise it would be hard to argue against the decision to cut ties with Postecoglou.
And that must start with three points against Wolves at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (29 December).
