Everton sold Amadou Onana to Aston Villa in the summer only because they did not want him anymore, Kevin Mirallas has said.
Onana, 23, ended his two-year spell at Goodison Park to join Premier League rivals Villa for £50million ahead of the 2024-25 season [The Times].
While it seemed the Toffees cashed in on the Belgium international to ease their financial situation, Mirallas thinks they were happy to sell him.
“He must not forget that Everton put him on the transfer market because they didn’t want him anymore”, the former attacker said on La Capitale in a “striking” statement, as quoted by Walfoot [20 November].
“I still have a lot of connections at the club and I can say that he is a player they no longer wanted and they were very happy to have sold him at such a high price.”
Everton favourite Kevin Mirallas questions Amadou Onana after Aston Villa transfer
Mirallas made the revelation about Onana’s Everton exit after being unimpressed by the midfielder’s performances in a Belgium shirt.
However, it is hard to believe the Merseyside-based club wanted to sell the former Lille man for any other reason than to balance the books.
Onana was also a regular for Sean Dyche’s side last season, making 37 appearances across all competitions and chipping in three goals and an assist in the process.
He is, nevertheless, a huge loss for Everton, who sit just three points above the relegation zone in sixteenth place.
Villa, meanwhile, are just one point off third place and have won three of their four UEFA Champions League games so far.
It is worth noting that the Goodison Park outfit signed Tim Iroegbunam from Villa in a separate transfer in the summer in an attempt to fill the void left by Onana.
The 21-year-old made a bright start to his time on Merseyside, starting all of the club’s first four league games, but has since seen things hit a snag after an injury.
In other Everton news, Dyche has provided an injury update on Dwight McNeil and Jarrad Branthwaite ahead of the Toffees’ clash with Brentford on Saturday, 23 November.
