Kieran Maguire mocks PL after multi-million Everton development

Kieran Maguire has mocked the Premier League after news emerged the body will pay a portion of the legal costs issued to Everton for breaching Profit and Sustainability rules last season.

Everton were billed a total of £4.9 million for the legal case but the club will only pay £1.7 million of the fees, with the Premier League paying the remaining £3.2 million [The Times].

Finance expert Maguire mocked the development on his X account [5 September] and the Premier League for a difficult week relating to PSR.

He said: “After the Leicester debacle, throwing in the white flag to Chelsea about the property sale & being made to reduce its commission legal bill to Everton by £3.2m, the Premier League has decided to follow UEFA and have its own theme tune played before matches.

“It has gone for the Benny Hill theme tune.”

The Premier League has shown its hand in its willingness to pay most of the Blues’ legal fees for the PSR debacle and other sides will smell blood in their own processes with the governing body.

Everton are right to feel wronged following their points deductions last term. Leicester City won their appeal to avoid a points deduction this season citing a loophole that the side had already been relegated from the Premier League before breaching the rules.

It seems the Toffees could have been better served had Abdoulaye Doucoure not scored his vital goal on the final day of the 2022/23 season to secure their Premier League status, an absurd notion considering their finances could be in a healthier position had they spent last season in the Championship.

It says a lot about the rules and the league that they are now being mocked by prominent figures in the game after a week of mishaps.

Frankly, the rules need a complete overhaul because they are absolutely not fit for purpose as they are.
