Goodison View: Manager grabs opportunity to show he wants Everton job with Dyche facing sack

Sean Dyche’s start to the season at Everton has caused major concern for the club’s hierarchy and it looks no coincidence that one previously-linked manager has miraculously re-emerged.

The 3-2 defeat against Crystal Palace at the weekend, snatched from the jaws of victory, and the Toffees boss’ subsequent comments about seeing it coming, infuriated Evertonians and piled pressure on his head [Michael Ball, 2 September].

TBR Football reported on 5 September that the club are ready to give the former Burnley manager some more time, but intermediaries have now got to work behind the scenes to sound out potential replacements.

So it seems an incredibly opportune moment for Vitor Pereira to emerge into Toffees fans’ consciousness for the first time since he came within touching distance of being appoint by Farhad Moshiri two and a half years ago.

Vitor Pereira eyes third shot at Everton job

Vitor Pereira has twice missed out on taking over at Everton after talks.

The Portuguese, who also came close over a decade ago after talks with the late Bill Kenwright [Liverpool Echo], must be feeling that it could be third time lucky at Goodison Park.

He gave an interview to GiveMeSport (5 September) highlighting his ambition to manage in a top five European league and the belief he will get a shot in the Premier League after near misses with the Toffees.

Having ultimately been overlooked for Ronald Koeman to replace Roberto Martinez, then seen the opportunity to take over from Rafa Benitez disappear amid supporter protests in favour of Frank Lampard he would be lucky to get the nod this time.

Very little has happened since January 2022 to convince Toffees fans that he would be the right man now after taking the Corinthians job the following month.

The 56-year-old only lasted until October at the Brazilian side, then spent even less time at Flamengo, and has been at Al Shabab in the Saudi Pro League since February this year.

There may be some Everton fans who are so sick of Dyche’s methods they would take anyone at this stage.

But when relegation has long been seen as a precursor to financial oblivion it would be a huge gamble to hand the reigns to a coach who has never managed in the Premier League, especially when he wasn’t the preferred choice during the comparatively heady days pre-Moshiri and was then hounded out of town before getting his feet under the table at the start of the descent towards annual battles against the drop.

With a takeover still not sorted Moshiri would probably rather not have to make a change at all, but David Moyes and Graham Potter look set to be on the shortlist if he does, and Pereira appears to taken a flyer on inclusion once more.

In other Everton news, the Toffees could be about to add a high-profile free agent after the transfer window closed.
