John Wenham is frustrated by the timing of Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-match ban.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes the club need the “top-level” midfielder now more than ever.
Bentancur was charged by the FA in September for suggesting South Korean team-mate Son Heung-min and his cousins “all look the same” during an interview broadcast in Uruguay last June (via the Standard, 12 September).
It was confirmed via the FA’s official website on Monday (18 November) that “An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview. “
However, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t understand why it has taken this long for the midfielder to be punished.
“This kills us because he is in such great form,” Wenham said.
“He is banned for seven matches, which includes some massive games. It is beyond frustrating that Spurs are facing the consequences now, the busiest period of the season, for something that happened in the summer.
“There are games essentially every three days during December, and you need your genuine top-level players. Therefore, to lose Bentancur is a massive blow.”
Tottenham to be without Rodrigo Bentancur until 29 December
While he can still feature in the UEFA Europa League, Bentancur won’t be available domestically for Spurs until their Premier League clash with Wolves at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday 29 December.
Bentancur made a mistake, and ultimately it is hard to argue against him being punished for that mistake. However, it would be fair for supporters to question the timing of this punishment.
Bentancur’s comments were made in the summer, and the midfielder was charged by the FA in September (via the Standard, 12 September).
Therefore, it does seem odd that his punishment has only just been handed to him, a decision which seems particularly harsh on Ange Postecoglou considering how busy Spurs’ fixture schedule is over the coming weeks.
In other Tottenham news, Jamie O’Hara has torn one player to shreds amid a “liability” admission.
