Bryan King claims Tottenham are in control when it comes to Cristian Romero’s long-term future.
The ex-Spurs scout believes the centre-back is keen to start winning major honours at club level after his successes with Argentina.
It has been widely speculated that Romero could leave Spurs at the end of the season in search of those honours, with Yan Bisseck viewed as a potential replacement (via Inter Live, 10 November).
Jonathan Tah is another centre-back who Spurs are reportedly interested in signing (via CaughtOffside, 17 November), with talks reportedly having already been held (via TBR Football, 11 November).
However, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks the German would want certain guarantees to join the club.
“There have been reports recently that Romero could leave,” King said,
“Tah is a good player. However, if Spurs are going to sign him, he would want guaranteed first-team football. I can’t see him leaving Bayer Leverkusen until the summer anyway.
“As for Romero, Spurs are in the driving seat when it comes to his future. They will decide when to let him go if he is to leave, it won’t be him telling Tottenham when he wants to go.
“A lot of these players and their agents never seem to be satisfied. However, having won the World Cup, Romero would be expecting to win things at club level, but Tottenham look a long way from winning anything.”
Tottenham to sign Jonathan Tah as a replacement for Cristian Romero?
Spurs might find it tough to get a deal agreed for Tah with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Bayern Munich also keen on the defender.
However, reports that the North London club are looking at him suggest they might already be planning for life without Romero.
The 26-year-old is a key player for Ange Postecoglou, and losing him would be a blow for the Australian.
However, if he is suitably replaced, it could be a blow that the club can recover from.
In other Tottenham news, the club have also been linked to a defender from the Premier League in a brand-new transfer update.
