King moots long-term issue for Tottenham star after 'Harsh' development this week

Bryan King has speculated that Rodrigo Bentancur will need some time to get back up to speed at Tottenham after his seven-match suspension.

The ex-Spurs scout doesn’t understand the thinking behind the punishment which has been handed to the midfielder after he was charged by the FA in September for suggesting South Korean team-mate Son Heung-min and his cousins “all look the same” during an interview broadcast in Uruguay last June (via the Standard, 12 September).

It was confirmed via the FA’s official website on Monday (18 November) that “An independent Regulatory Commission has imposed a seven-match suspension and £100,000 fine on Rodrigo Bentancur for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a media interview. “

However, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think this is a fair punishment, nor is the timing of the punishment just.

“This could cause issues for Bentancur when he comes back,” King said.

“He will be out of rhythm and will need time to get back up to speed. I think this punishment was very harsh. What was the point of him apologising if he has been punished like this, all these months later? I can’t get my head around it.

“Bentancur knew he did wrong, he immediately apologised. This is a big loss for the manager, and it is really bad timing for him. I just think it is terribly harsh, for something that the player has apologised for.”

Bentancur made a mistake and has rightly been punished for that mistake.

However, some might argue that the timing and severity of the punishment are harsh, and those arguments are completely understandable. As reported by the Telegraph (18 November), Spurs’ Premier League rivals are shocked by the severity of Bentancur’s punishment and the inconsistencies around it.

Therefore, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Ange Postecoglou has also been caught off guard.

However, it doesn’t look as though anything is going to change, which means Postecoglou will need to find a way to cope over the coming weeks.

As for Bentancur, he could struggle to get himself back up to speed when he returns, and he could even struggle to get back into the Spurs team.

As a result, he will need to find a way to keep himself at 100 per cent during his suspension.
