King says Tottenham must make specific promises to seal £25m transfer

Bryan King claims Tottenham must make “promises” to Hiroki Ito over his playing time if they want to sign the VfB Stuttgart defender.

The ex-Spurs scout is not convinced that the Japan international would want to make the switch to North London because of the players already at the club.

It comes after a report in The Sun (6 June) shared that Tottenham are interested in Ito, who has a release clause of somewhere between £21.5 and £25million.

But King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – feels that the 25-year-old might not be keen to settle for a squad role.

“Spurs already have Destiny Udogie and he is going to be the starting left-back,” King said.

“They’re well-stocked in terms of defenders and if Ito is going to join, Tottenham would need to make him some promises.

“I can’t imagine the player will be happy to accept a reduced role because he is playing regularly at the moment.

“He will likely earn more money in the Premier League, but if he isn’t playing, his value will depreciate.”

Do Tottenham need to sign Hirko Ito from VfB Stuttgart?

Ito is a versatile player who can play both left-back and centre-back.

However, with Micky van de Ven capable of doing something similar and Ben Davies and Udogie both at the club, this might not be a priority signing.

Spurs have quite a few defenders on the books and would probably benefit more from signing reinforcements in attack and midfield.

While he might bring quality, Spurs’ time might be wasted convincing Ito to join the club and that time could be better spent searching for more appropriate targets.
