Kenny Miller has admitted that he is “delighted” to see Oscar Cortes return to Rangers having been impressed by his initial spell at Ibrox.

The winger joined Philippe Clement’s ranks from Lens during the January transfer window and shone quickly before an injury derailed his loan spell after only seven matches and one goal in Glasgow.

However, the Gers have extended the 20-year-old’s loan by a year and now have an obligation to buy him for upwards of £4million next summer, something that BBC Sport pundit Miller admits may be a risk.

Writing for the Daily Record on Sunday (9 June) he said: “That’s why I’m delighted to see Oscar Cortes back at Rangers from Lens in a deal which means the club is obliged to buy him for £4.5million next summer.

“Obviously, there is a risk element attached to a deal constructed in that fashion, but my belief is that Cortes can handle what’s ahead of him at Ibrox.

“I know it was only a small sample size of seven appearances and one goal before injury struck during his first loan spell at the club last season, but I saw enough to convince me he can be a real asset to Rangers.

“He had the work ethic, the balance and the hunger to get into goal-scoring positions. Oscar was Ryan Kent but with a greater threat about him.

“Rangers have been screaming out for a player in that position and Oscar has the full package.”

Have Rangers re-signed Oscar Cortes permanently in Ibrox summer transfer window?

This summer is going to be about closing the gap to Celtic for Rangers. Philippe Clement and his recruitment team have to do everything they possibly can to try and ensure that they get their hands on the league title.

Being second best means nothing in Glasgow and the Belgian has found that out the hard way. He will be hungrier than ever to beat the Hoops next season, but he will have to be creative in the transfer market to close the gap.

Without the guarantee of Champions League football, the Gers cannot throw money around recklessly. They need to be clever in their recruitment to ensure that they get the best quality of players at the best price.

They’ve already done that with both Mohammed Diomande and Cortes this summer. Hopefully, they’ll be able to pull off a similar deal to bring Abdallah Sima back from Brighton either permanently or on loan once again.
