Journalist shares if Bell and Downing will pass PL owners and directors test at Everton

Prospective Everton owners George Downing and Andy Bell would have “no problem” passing the Premier League’s managers and directors test, according to Matt Slater.

The pair of Toffees supporting businessman are one of a number of bidders looking to acquire Farhad Moshiri’s controlling stake in Sean Dyche’s side, following the collapse of 777 Partners takeover.

A primary reason the Miami-based investment firm wasn’t able to complete their acquisition was the Premier League’s rules, but The Athletic’s Slater insists that wouldn’t be an issue for Downing and Bell.

Speaking on The Toffee Blues YouTube channel (11 June, 1:55) he said: “They’re lifelong Evertonians, successful businessmen in their own right and they know what they’re doing.

“They’re very well advised, they’ve got good lawyers, they’ve done their due diligence, they are very credible and would have absolutely no problem in terms of Premier League managers and directors test or borrowing money which is important.”

It shouldn’t come as a welcome surprise to hear that a party interested in buying Everton are actually financially equipped to do so, but 777 Partners have lowered expectations so far that this is viewed as a success.

Whether or not Moshiri is keen to progress with Bell and Downing in the future, it is clear from Slater’s latest update that the pair are more than ready to fulfil the Premier League’s demands and be granted approval to complete their takeover.

That should mean that this deal could be completed quickly and efficiently if the businessman are able to agree terms with Moshiri, but that hurdle still needs to be jumped before fans can begin to get too far ahead of themselves.

Hopefully, something can be arranged as quickly as possible so attention can then instead turn to the summer transfer window. Dyche needs new additions to his squad and that cannot happen until an owner is in place.
