Journalist: Rangers hit by 'Huge blow' after transfer development

Dan Bardell believes Rangers being rejected by Jose Cordoba in favour of signing for Norwich City shows how hard attracting players could be without Champions League football.

The defender rejected a move to Ibrox in favour of making a move to the English second tier on Wednesday (5 June).

This ended the Gers’ pursuit of the Panamanian, which had been bubbling under the surface for many weeks but ended in disappointment.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has suggested that Rangers will not be as attractive a prospect unless Champions League football is secured, with the Gers having to go through the qualifying stages.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Bardell said: “That’s the state of modern football, unfortunately, one of the main reasons a player would sign for Rangers now is that they are in the Champions League.

Without knowing that, as huge a club as Rangers are, it will make it difficult to attract players. If Norwich were in the Premier League fans could probably stomach that move.

But Norwich are a Championship side and you don’t know if they’ll even be challenging for promotion next season, it’s a huge blow.

Rangers rejected by Jose Cordoba for Norwich City

It has to be said that it is hugely frustrating for the Gers to miss out on one of their key targets after such a long pursuit of the defender.

The Panamanian was consistently linked with a move to Ibrox from Levski Sofia which had fans excited for the transfer window ahead.

That excitement has fallen away slightly after being rejected by the centre-back in favour of a move to the Championship in England.

Although the season ended in frustrating circumstances, the upcoming campaign has the opportunity to fight for the title once again.

No disrespect to Norwich but after a season where they finished sixth before sacking their manager, next season under a new boss is unlikely to end with promotion to the Premier League.

Rangers Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement has a Rangers record of one draw and three losses in four Old Firm matches.

Cordoba could have featured regularly in a title fight and potentially in the Champions League, if Rangers get there, but he has turned down that opportunity.

It is a frustrating moment for Philippe Clement and the Rangers hierarchy as they embark on a huge rebuild this summer.

In other Rangers news, a confirmed signing is exactly what the club needs as Oscar Cortes returns.
