Report: Tottenham now working on deal to sign £35m player after he changed his mind following medical

Tottenham are now working on a deal to sign a Championship player after he had a change of heart.

Spurs have been no strangers to dipping into England’s second tier for signings over the years, taking Ryan Sessegnon, James Maddison and Jack Clarke from the Championship in recent times.

Now, Tottenham are working hard to sign another player from that division after a dramatic turn of events…

Tottenham pushing to sign Archie Gray

A story from The Athletic now states that Tottenham are trying to sign Leeds No.22 Archie Gray after his move to Brentford collapsed.

The Bees thought they had signed the England U21 international in a £35m deal on Saturday, and the 18-year-old even underwent a medical after agreeing personal terms with Thomas Frank’s side.

Now – however – Gray is believed to have had second thoughts over a move to Brentford, with Tottenham now in talks to sign the teenager instead.

The Athletic state that no agreement has been reached, although there is an expectation from all parties that a deal will be agreed.

No fee is mentioned, although we would presume Leeds will accept the same £35m they agreed to take from Brentford, on the basis that Spurs pay more of it upfront – Nizaar Kinsella of the Evening Standard believes it was the structure of that payment that saw talks collapse between the Whites and the Bees, rather than the value itself.

The Athletic add that Tottenham have wanted to sign Gray for some time now, and even attempted to bring him to N17 at the age of 17 – before he signed a professional contract with Leeds.

Oliver Skipp could join Leeds

Interestingly, Leeds could agree to take some of Tottenham’s fringe players in the deal to sign Gray.

A story from Football London states that Oliver Skipp is one player who could swap north London for Yorkshire as part of the move, with Daniel Farke particularly keen on reuniting with the 23-year-old who shone under his guidance while on loan at Norwich in the 2020/21 campaign.

If Skipp is mentioned during talks, it may even see Tottenham secure Gray for less than £35m – but only time will tell what happens for certain.
