Bryan King has blasted Jarrad Branthwaite after the Everton defender agreed personal terms with Manchester United.

The ex-Goodison scout has labelled the 21-year-old “a young Harry Maguire” and believes United could regret signing him, should a deal be agreed.

It comes after The Times reported on Thursday (13 June) that the Red Devils had agreed on terms with Branthwaite’s representatives.

The centre-back would reportedly earn between £150,000 and £160,000-per-week at Old Trafford.

However, United are thought to have no intention of matching the Toffees’ £70million asking price.

But King – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – has suggested that Everton should let Branthwaite go.

“To me, he is just a young Harry Maguire,” King said.

“He makes the same mistakes as Maguire. United paid £80million for Maguire and it looks as if they’re going to make a similar mistake.

“I would have thought they would be looking for a player above this quality. Branthwaite is unproven and is yet to show that he is even a £50million centre-back.

“Everton should be biting United’s hands off.”

Everton and Manchester United to negotiate a fee for Jarrad Branthwaite

According to BBC Sport (14 June), United and Everton are set to begin discussions over a transfer for Branthwaite.

The Toffees’ response is expected to be “frosty”. However, they should be open to letting the Englishman leave the club.

Now that he has reportedly agreed terms with United, he has made his stance on the matter very clear.

Branthwaite wants a summer exit, and therefore, there is no point in Everton fighting hard to keep hold of a player who doesn’t want to be at the club.

As a result, selling an expensive asset like Branthwaite feels like it would be the right move, especially considering all of the financial troubles at Goodison Park.

In other Everton news, Vatche Manoukian has been told to increase his takeover bid amid an £800million claim.
